Know All About World Youth Skills Day

To raise awareness about the importance of investing in youth skills development, the United Nations General Assembly has decided to celebrate the first World Youth Skills Day (WYSD) on 15 July 2015.

Why Is Youth Skills Day Celebrated ?

There are more youth on the planet than ever before. These young people are poised with all of the potential and energy to be our next generation of leaders, workers and parents.
That's why the United Nations has decided to celebrate youth through the first ever World Youth Skills Day on July 15, 2015. Fostering the acquisition of skills by youth will enhance their ability to make informed choices with regard to life and work and empower them to gain access to changing labour markets and viable employment opportunities. To raise the profile and recognition of skilled people, and show how important skills are in achieving economic growth and personal success.

"Making skill development a national priority, July 15 will be celebrated as the World Youth Skills Day, where major announcements on skills will be made by the Prime Minster
While many of today’s youth inhabit a world of unlimited opportunity and possibility, millions more are being left out.

WYSD celebrations coincide with an important year of setting the agenda for the future: a new climate agreement and the adoption of the Sustainable Development goals are just around the corner. That is why this year’s theme is “Youth skills for work and life in the post-2015 agenda”. WYSD is in line with the upcoming Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030, which propose two goals on education and skills for employment:

  • Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
  • Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.

In this context, the UN is organizing several events at UN Headquarters in Bonn (Germany), New York (USA), Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) and elsewhere.

The United Nations in Bonn will observe the first World Youth Skills Day together with the German UN Youth Delegate, WorldSkills competitors, as well as guests from Bonn University and UN Bonn staff, with a panel discussion on “Youth skills for work and life in the post-2015 agenda”

On 18 December 2014, the United Nations General Assembly adopted by consensus, a resolution, spearheaded by Sri Lanka, declaring 15th July as the World Youth Skills Day. Sri Lanka initiated this resolution, with the assistance of the G77 & China, to highlight at a global level, the importance of youth skills development. The goal is to achieve better socio-economic conditions for today’s youth, including as a means of addressing the challenges of unemployment and under employment. The UN Secretary - General’s Special Envoy for Youth, Mr. Ahmed Alhendawi, and his office supported this initiative from the early days, while the UN system in New York and Colombo were solidly behind it.
