The government on Wednesday launched the Digital India Campaign to provide fast internet connections for all.The government is reinvigorating an $18 billion campaign to provide fast internet connections for all, with a "digital week" aimed at popularising Prime Minister Narendra Modi's campaign promise to connect 250,000 villages in India by 2019.
The plan aims to stop net imports of technology and electronics by 2020, while creating over 100 million jobs.
The digital week, being launched later on Wednesday, will involve citizen awareness programmes.

At least 60 Egyptian soldiers were on Wednesday killed as heavily-armed ISIS militants launched a wave of simultaneous attacks on army checkpoints, including three suicide bombings, in one of the biggest assaults in the restive Sinai Peninsula. 
"More than 70 terrorist elements waged simultaneous attacks against five security checkpoints in North Sinai," army spokesperson brigadier general Mohamed Samir said in a statement on his Facebook page

World Bank approves $650 mn loan for Indian Rail Project
The World Bank on Wednesday approved $650 million towards loans for the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) to facilitate faster and more efficient movement of goods between northern and eastern parts of India.
The Eastern Corridor is 1,840 km long and extends from Ludhiana to Kolkata.
"The World Bank is supporting the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) as a series of projects in which three sections will be delivered sequentially, but with considerable overlap in their construction schedules,” the Bank said in a statement.

An Indonesian air force transport plane plowed into a residential neighborhood in the country's third-largest city of Medan shortly after takeoff on Tuesday, killing dozens of people.
Television footage showed the mangled wreckage of the C-130 Hercules, a crumpled burning car and a shattered building that local media said was recently built and contained a spa, shops and homes. Smoke billowed from the site and several thousand people milled nearby. Rescue teams scrambled over the rubble, searching for any survivors.Air force chief Air Marshall Agus Supriatna said 49 bodies have been recovered and taken to Medan's Adam Malik hospital.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet will soon take up a proposal to combine the New Delhi-based BMB with State Bank, the people said, asking not to be identified as the information isn’t public. BMB, which has more than 60 branches, was founded in 2013 by the former government to focus on lending to women in the country.

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced on Sunday that the nation's banks and stock market would be closed on Monday amid fears of financial collapse. Tsipras made the address hours after the European Central Bank stated it would not increase the levels of emergency credit, known as emergency liquidity assistance, that it provides to Greek banks in order for the institutions to keep running. The prime minister blamed the ECB for forcing Greece to impose the measures, which are intended to prevent a bank run by Greeks from draining the country's remaining funds.

2. Assam Gets Shaken With 5.6 Magnitude Earthquake 

A 5.6 magnitude earthquake has struck some 23km from the Indian city of Basugaon in the northeastern state of Assam. The moderate, shallow earthquake was also reportedly felt in neighboring Bhutan, Bangladesh and Nepal.
The 10km deep quake struck shortly after 1:00am GMT on Sunday, with the epicentre reported to have been 23km north of Basugaon, according to USGS.

3. Two Indians Among 26 killed In Suicide Attack In Kuwait Mosque

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has claimed on Friday the deadly bombing on a Kuwaiti mosque, which left 27 people killed and 227 wounded, according to the health ministry.
An ISIS statement posted on social media identified the bomber as Abu Suleiman al-Muwahed and said the target was a “temple of the rejectionists” - a term used by the Islamist militant group to refer to Shiite Muslims - and said dozens were killed or wounded.

Wholesale Price Index (WPI) based inflation dropped to 2.36 per cent in May 2015. Decline in the prices of fuel, food items and manufactured products kept the inflation in negative zone for the 7th month in a series. In April the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) based inflation was (-)2.65 per cent. It has been in the negative zone since November 2014. 
Looking at the annual data, it seems that mainly aided by moderation in the prices across all major categories that is primary articles, manufacturing products, fuel & power and minerals the WPI for the month of May 2015 stood at -2.36 per cent.

4. 23 killed in Chad suicide bombings blamed on Boko Haram

Twenty-three people were killed and more than 100 wounded in twin suicide bombings targeting police in the Chadian capital Monday, with the government blaming Boko Haram militants for the bloodshed.
They were the first such attacks in the capital of the central African nation, which has been on the frontline of the regional fight against the Nigerian Islamist group."Boko Haram chose the wrong target. These lawless and faithless terrorists will be flushed out and neutralised wherever they are," the government said in a statement.

1. Nepal PM Sushil Koirala invites PM Narendra Modi to address donors' conference in Kathmandu

Nepal Prime Minister Sushil Koirala on Thursday invited his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi to visit the country on June 25 to address the first donors' conference being hosted in Kathmandu. Prime Minister Koirala also briefed Prime Minister Modi on the steps his Government is taking for the rehabilitation and reconstruction in Nepal following the earthquakes in April and May. He also mentioned that he has sent his Finance Minister, Ram Chandra Mahat, to Delhi with a personal invitation for Prime Minister Modi.

2. Africa creates TFTA - Cape to Cairo free-trade zone

African leaders have agreed to create the continent's largest free-trade zone, covering 26 countries in an area from Cape Town to Cairo. The deal, signed in Egypt, is intended to ease the movement of goods across member countries which represent more than half the continent's GDP. Three existing trade blocs - the Southern African Development Community (Sadc); the East African Community (EAC) and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa) - are to be united into a single new zone. With this agreement comes into fruition a century-old dream to link the continent from the Cape to Cairo.

India on Wednesday undocked its first indigenously-built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant at a simple ceremony at Cochin Shipyard Limited here. The ship, built at CSL, will undergo a series of fitment and trial processes before it is ready for propulsion and inducted into the Navy, CSL officials said.India's largest aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant's induction into the Navy will be done after a series of static and dynamic trials, they said. The successful completion of the 40,000 tonne aircraft carrier puts India in the elite group of four nations - the US, Russia, the UK and France - in the world capable of designing and constructing aircraft carriers.

Union Cabinet approves Rs 6,000 crore
Union Cabinet approved an interest-free loan i.e. soft loan to the tune of 6,000 crore rupees to enable sugar mills pay arrears to farmers. Decision in this regard was taken by Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. Apart from this decision cabinet also approved hike in prices of Ethanol. As per this decision, interest on the loan will not be charged for a year but the interest will be borne by the Union government from sugar development fund.  The money to be paid as arrears to farmers under this loan will be directed credited in Jan Dhan accounts of farmers. It should be noted that Sugar mills in India owe over 21,000 crore rupees to farmers because they were not able to sell sugar stocks which have remained unsold due to falling prices of raw sugar in domestic and international markets.

Padmasree Warrior, India-born has stepped down from her post of Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at global IT giant Cisco. She had resigned after a significant restructuring of top management of Cisco under incoming CEO Chuck Robbins. Now she will have advisory post in Cisco till September 2015.
She had joined Cisco in 2008 and had served as CTO and senior vice-president of engineering during her seven years at the company.

P L Subramanian appointed as non-executive Director of India Cements Limited

P L Subramanian has been appointed as Non-Executive Director India Cements Limited (CIL) with an immediate effect. Subramanian had joined former BCCI President N Srinivasan-led India Cements in 1986 and had served in various responsibilities. He had retired from service in May 2015 after serving as Executive Director (Operations) of the company.

He also had served as a Director of Andhra Pradesh Gas Power Corporation Limited, India Cements Infrastructures Limited, Coromandel Electric Company Limited and Trishul Concrete Products Limited.

Mahendra Kumar Sharma appointed as non-executive Chairman of ICICI Bank

Mahendra Kumar Sharma was appointed as non-executive chairman of India's largest private sector lender Industrial Credit and Investment Corporation of India (ICICI) Bank. He will replace K V Kamath who had resigned from top most in order to join as President of the Shanghai based New Development Bank established by the BRICS nations. Presently, Sharma is an independent director of two subsidiaries of ICICI Bank viz ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company and ICICI Prudential Asset Management Company. Earlier from 2003 to 2011, he also had served as an independent director on the board of ICICI Bank.

Trios of 3800-year-old statuettes found in Vichama, Peru

Researchers in Peru have discovered trios of statuettes which belong to some 3,800 years ago. They were discovered by research team led by archaeologist Ruth Shady. The final discovery announcement was made by the Peruvian Cultural Ministry in Lima. The mud statuettes were found inside a reed basket in a building at the ancient city of Vichama in northern Peru.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel says the Group of Seven wealthy democracies have agreed that the world should phase out the use of fossil fuels by the end of this century. That is a technical term for ending the use of oil, gas and coal but not nuclear power and replacing them with alternative sources of energy such as wind and solar power.

TDP Telangana MLA Revanth Reddy was caught while allegedly trying to bribe a nominated MLA to vote for his party's nominee in Telangana Legislative Council polls. He has been arrested and sent to 14-day judicial custody in cash-for-vote scam.
The animosity that has flared up between the chief ministers of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana following the cash-for-vote episode took a turn for the worse on Monday with N Chandrababu Naidu warning K Chandrasekhar Rao that the latter would pay a heavy price for trying to implicate him in the scandal.

Twelve Maoists were on Tuesday gunned down in an encounter with the police in Palamau district in Jharkhand. "The encounter took place in Bakoria village, about 140 km from Ranchi in the wee hours. All the bodies have been recovered," Superintendent of Police Mayur Patel said.
This is the first major incident in Jharkhand after Maoists had ambushed a police vehicle in Dumka on April 20 last year

A Dornier aircraft with three crew members on board is missing since last night off Chennai.
The aircraft took off from Chennai at 5:30 pm yesterday and lost contact at around 10 pm in Tiruchirapalli, aviation sources said.
The aircraft is said to have been on a routine surveillance sortie over the sea.The Indian Navy and Coast Guard have launched a full scale search off the Karaikal coast. More details are awaited.

The Modi government has decided to leave out Surya Namaskar from the asanas that will be performed during nation-wide events to mark the first International Yoga Day on 21 June, following protests from Muslim bodies. 
The  All India Muslim Personal Law Board had said that the Surya Namaskar was "against Islam," and had urged the government to not make it compulsory across schools during the Yoga Day. The United Nations had declared the International Yoga Day last year, on 11 December.

A large explosion has struck close to government buildings in the centre of Afghanistan's capital, Kabul.
The blast occurred as government workers were about to leave work.
It struck close to two government buildings, the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Mines, as well as the Serena Hotel, which was the target of a large attack in 2014.
The Reuters news agency said the explosion was felt several kilometres away.

The minister, who is on a visit to the US to attract investment into the newly created state, discussed with Nadella various issues of collaboration.
The Microsoft India Development Centre (MSIDC) in Hyderabad is Microsoft's biggest research and development centre outside of its headquarters in the US.

4. Aruna Shanbaug dies after 42 years In coma

Aruna Shanbaug, the former nurse at Mumbai's King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital who was sexually assaulted by a hospital ward boy in 1973 and had been comatose since then, died on Monday morning. She was 67.
KEM Hospital Dean Avinash Supe said police permissions and other formalities are being completed before finalising Shanbaug's last rites later on Monday.

Jayalalithaa acquitted of all charges in wealth case
Three others also acquitted; massive celebrations at party headquarters in Chennai and around Tamil Nadu.
In a major victory for AIADMK, a special bench of the Karnataka High Court on Monday set aside the trial court order convicting former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in the disproportionate assets case.
Justice C.R Kumaraswamy, who read out the judgment at 11 a.m, said the appeals of all the four accused, including Ms. Jayalalithaa have been allowed and they were being acquitted of all charges.

3. SatyamCase : All 10 convicts including B Ramalinga Raju, granted bail 

Ramalinga Raju and his brother has been granted bail today by the local court with personal bond amout of Rs 1 lakh each. Other 8 accused were granted bail with bonds of Rs 50,000 each. 
The local court earlier had deferred its order to to May 11 its order on an application filed by Satyam Computers founder B Ramalinga Raju and nine others, seeking suspension of their sentence and fines imposed on them in the multi-crore rupee accounting fraud.
Raju, the kingpin of the scam, and nine other convicts, currently lodged in Cherlapally Central Prison, had filed the appeals and applications in the MSJ court on Monday, challenging their conviction, besides sentences and fines imposed by the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court (ACMM) in the over Rs 7,000-crore scandal that came to light in 2009, and enlarging them on bail.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said the GST bill, which was approved by Lok Sabha on Wednesday, should be sent to a Select Committee as a number of changes have been brought in the new bill. 
The bill was approved by Lok Sabha on Wednesday after a walkout by Congress but Government has still not given up hope of taking all sections on board. 
Government sources claimed that Congress floor managers have expressed eagerness to commit their support to the bill in the next session if it is referred to a select committee this time, which examines the changes into it.
